Wichita Barbarians RFC
Two rival rugby football clubs merged into what is one of Wichita’s longest-standing sports teams, the Wichita Barbarians Rugby Football Club. In 1982, the Wichita Rugby Union Football Club joined forces with Old Yeller Rugby. The powerful team became a force to be reckoned with in Division I of the Heart of American Union, but low recruitment numbers eventually weighed heavily on the club.
In 1990, the team dispersed, but three years later, a revival built the team to success. Today, the Wichita Barbarians RFC is five for seven on league titles through 2015. The club was the Heart of America/Mid-America DIII champions from 2009-2011, 2013 and 2015.
The Barbarians were the West/Frontier Regional DIII champions in 2012 and 2015, and the USA Rugby National Championships DIII champions in 2015. Nationally, the club has also finished in the top 16 in Division III play. The Barbarians RFC plays Sept. to Nov. at Harrison Park.
